Julia Sørensen Shaw

abstract artist

Julia Sørensen Shaw was born and raised in Reno, Nevada. She got her BA
from the University of San Diego in 2014, and then went on to get her MFA from
the San Francisco Art Institute in 2017. Currently, she is the Creative Director at
the Honolulu Design Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. She has been featured in
galleries in San Diego, San Francisco and Honolulu and continues to create new
bodies of work that are on display at the Honolulu Design Center.

Working across different mediums, Julia employs tools from drawing, painting
and sculpture, to create works that fill the gallery space with a haunting

presence that is simultaneously inviting and unsettling. Her series of non-
representational drawings and paintings are informed by personal memories of

triumph and defeat. She often works with different sculpting materials, such as
pumice gel, joint compound and other construction materials, in order to build
up the surface of her paintings to capture a topographical notion. Her color
choices are bold and dramatic. While painting, she depends on the movement
of her own body to translate movement into the piece. The method is very
physical and functions as a release of emotion and tension. Her materials will
never manifest the same way twice, making each piece unique and impossible
to replicate.
